Kandis Log Boom (one of the seven log booms in Sg Klang installed to catch floating debris under the SMG project). With a notion of creating more direct paths for the recyclables to end up at recycling facilities as well as benefitting the community living by the Sg Kandis Log Boom, the pilot has successfully recovered over 11 MT of plastic bottles, equivalent to giving 1,100,000 plastic bottles a second life through recycling.

Brief Overview

The Ocean Cleanup develops and scales technologies to rid the world’s oceans of plastic. They aim to achieve this goal by taking a two-pronged approach: stemming the inflow via rivers and cleaning up what has already accumulated in the ocean. For the latter, The Ocean Cleanup is developing large-scale systems to efficiently concentrate the plastic for periodic removal. This plastic is tracked, traced through DNVs chain of custody model to certify claims of origin when recycling it into new products. To curb the tide via rivers, The Ocean Cleanup has developed Interceptor™ solutions to halt and extract riverine plastic before it reaches the ocean. Founded in 2013 by Boyan Slat, The Ocean Cleanup now employs a broadly multi-disciplined team of approximately 100. The foundation is headquartered in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Malaysia 1st Interceptor™ 002 deployment
(River Rehabilitation)

The Ocean Cleanup’s Interceptors™ were designed to prevent the unrelenting flow of plastic pollution from rivers into the world’s oceans. Deployed in the Klang River, the Interceptor™ is a welcome addition to the Selangor Marine Gateway initiative, as it helps to improve efficiency, resulting in quicker and more scalable cleanup.

Malaysia 2nd Interceptor™ 005 deployment
(River Rehabilitation)

Also deployed in the Klang River, Interceptor™ 005’s build and deployment were funded by the band Coldplay. This is the first of the Interceptors™ to be built in Malaysia, and deployment ensures short lines between the originating factory and operations. Interceptor™ 005 features an upgraded design that ensures the optimal interception of plastics and other floating debris.
